Why We Are Called SAMA Climbing

When we were looking for a name, we went through a long list of possibilities. Some were functional ("Dhrishti," "Torus"), others were poetic ("Spherical Dimensions"), and a few just made us laugh. But none of them felt right.

Then one day, Nikhil said something unexpected:

“What inspires you bro?”

At the time, I was exploring certain Pranayama techniques from the Ashtanga Yoga tradition. And suddenly, it clicked.

Climbing and breathing go hand in hand. The more evenly you breathe, the more fluidly you move. And in that moment, one practice stood out: Sama Vritti. In Sanskrit, Sama means equal, even, or in balance, and Vritti means system or existence. So Sama Vritti is a system or existence of uniformity in breath. It is a practice of equal breathing, steady and uniform inhale and exhale. It’s a technique that cultivates strength, focus, and control.

We realized that what we were creating were not just climbing walls, but tools for focused movement with rhythm and balance, akin to dancing, with the caveat here that we dance on the climbing wall.

And so, the name came to us: SAMA Climbing. A strong awareness to the breath, to stillness in motion, and to the equilibrium we can find on the wall and off.
